A little background information…
Thanks for inquiring about the backyard camping spot at Stonetower Mansion. Below are details.
This is a backyard site. It is a 1-tent sized spot. There is a limit of two persons per night. The spot is located in the backyard of the mansion in a garden. This is an urban area (quite different from boondocking). The mansion is undergoing restoration. It is a 6-year project of which 4 years have been completed. Restoration projects/construction change seasonally. There is limited access to a workshop bathroom and shower. It is primitive but clean and functional. This is a vegetarian residence. This is a quiet family home and neighborhood.
There are 3-garden cats on the premises. Please be mindful and respectful to them. Please do not bring dogs to the camp site. While we all love animals, this is an urban area and a barking dog will quickly become a nuisance and the garden cats are afraid of dogs. If you feel that your dog is an exception, please talk to us about it as we understand that not all dogs are barkers.
There are 4 SEPTA buses within walking distance which makes sightseeing very easy. It is a 20-minute trip to the attractions downtown, as well as walking distance to Fairmount park. Biking trails/hiking trails are within a couple of blocks. There are dozens of restaurants, and shops in walking distance. The camp site is available to people who are touring, traveling, visiting, backpacking, etc… It is not a spot for living. While we are sensitive to people’s predicaments, we cannot allow the site to be used as a residence. Two-night’s stay is the norm, but if you need longer due to touring schedules, etc… please talk to us . We also have loads of carpentry, lawn care, painting, sanding, wood restoration, etc… that could be done in exchange for use of the camp site. This is by arrangement only and you have to have skills in the areas that the work is needed.Lastly, you are camping at your own risk. We are not responsible for anyone’s items, or anyone who slips/falls/injuries etc… The parking is on-street parking.
Use of the site is a privilege, not an expectation. If you make a reservation, please follow through as once a reservation is set, we have to turn other people down. No-calls/No-shows ruin the opportunity for other people to participate.
Lodging in Philadelphia is very expensive. $150 is the average hotel room. It is very difficult for people on a budget to visit the area and not spend a fortune on lodging. Backyard camping is one way that people can travel and lodge affordably. There is a large network of people who allow camping in their yards, gardens, etc… We are a participant in this network. We enjoy meeting people from all over the world.
